Overview

Luxembourg passed its law on euthanasia and assisted suicide in 2009, following the Dutch and Belgian models. It remains the third country in the Benelux region to adopt such legislation, and requires patients to be adults with a serious and incurable condition.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be an adult (18+) or emancipated minor
  • Must be in a serious and incurable medical condition causing constant and unbearable physical or psychological suffering
  • The condition must be beyond remedy given the current state of medical science
  • Request must be voluntary, considered, and repeated
  • Two physicians must be consulted; if non-terminal, a third specialist and the National Ethics Commission

The Process

  • Written request submitted to physician
  • Physician consults a second independent doctor and, where applicable, a specialist
  • Minimum 15-day waiting period between written request and procedure (waived if death is imminent)
  • Every case is reported to the National Commission on Euthanasia for retrospective review
